M: Mike, co-worker
S: Samantha, the printing company representative

M: How about you tell him that your boss found out and said you can't see him except for business meetings?

S: That might work. What if he says that we will discuss business at dinner?

M: Good question. Say that your boss was pretty serious and that there is a policy of not dating clients at your company.

S: I think our business relationship is going to be very uncomfortable from now on.

M: It's too late to worry about that! You are just trying to get out of this with your job and hopefully keep your client too.

S: If I don't keep this client, I will lose my job anyway. How should I say that my boss found out?

M: Just innocently tell him that you told your boss and that's when you found out about the policy against relationships with clients.

S: Thanks Mike. I think that will work. Only one thing could mess this up.

M: What's that?

S: If he calls my boss and complains.

M: Yeah. Maybe you should tell your boss your plan first.

S: Oh, geee! Now you have to help me figure out how to explain it to my boss.

M: Mike
S: Samantha, the printing company representative

S: Can I ask your advice on something?

M: Just call me "Dear Abby". What's up?

S: One of my clients suddenly asked me out to dinner and I went out with him last night.

M: Well that usually ends up being a mistake.

S: I couldn't say "no" and now he's asked me out again.

M: What did you say?

S: I just stalled for time and said I needed to check my schedule and that I would call him today.

M: Why didn't you just say "no"?

S: His company is a very important client.
We have made a few mistakes on some work we did for him and I was afraid to say "no" to anything.

M: You should have said "no" in the first place. Never go out with a client, vendor or co-worker. It always spells trouble.

S: I thought it would be ok. He is a nice guy.

M: But you have to say "no" someday and then what will happen? Or do you just plan to keep saying "yes" until you marry him?

S: Very funny. I guess I better stop this before it gets any worse.

M: Let's come up with a way to let him down that doesn't make him too unhappy.

久々の更新で〜す。
私の悪い癖で、思いつくとすぐやらないと気がすまないの性質なのですが、どうもにもこうにも根気がない！（苦笑）
ブログを幾つも掛け持ちしすぎなのがいけないんですが、どれもとっても楽しいので勘弁してくださいね。で、このポッドキャストブログが一番準備に時間がかかる為、更新が途絶えがちだったのですけれど、久々にアクセス解析を見たら全然更新していないのにビジター数が私の他のブログの何百倍なので嬉しいびっくり！（と同時にちょっと複雑な気分、苦笑）
なので今回、真面目にアップしなければー！と心を入れ替えました。とりあえず、書き溜めてあった昔のマガジンからの会話を音声ファイルに作って、しばらく定期的に更新して行くことにします。新規にストーリー作るより、その方がずーっと楽なので（苦笑）
今風邪の治りかけで思いっきり鼻声なんですが、まーそういう声の人もいるだろうし、いいやと録音してみました。聞きにくかったらごめんなさいっ（汗）

それではシリーズ第一回目、「仕事上の人間関係」（全5回）　エピソード１、”サマンサ、クライアントのジョーに食事に誘われる”です。
いや〜、ありがちですね。

J: Joe
S: Samantha, the printing company sales representative

J: Hi Samantha. I'm so glad you could come on such short notice.

S: I'm always available for an important client like you guys.

J: I saw the layout that you produced for our Winter catalog and I have a few questions.

S: I hope everything is ok.

J: I want our 800 number to show on both the back and front covers. Right now it only shows on the back.

S: I had some trouble placing the number on the front because of the cover art. So I dropped it. I will try to work it in again.

J: Thanks. Also several of the page numbers don't show on various pages because of the color of the text.
Can you change the page numbers on those pages to a different color that shows up better?

S: I will change them to white when they are on a dark background.

J: That should work. One last thing. Are you doing anything tonight for dinner?

S: Um. No. What did you have in mind?

J: I was wondering if you would like to have dinner with me tonight?

S: Ok.

J: Ok. I'll pick you up at 7:00 then.

S: Ok. See you then.

（注：私達が本当にした会話ではなくて、内容はあくまでフィクションですよ、笑）

Jim: Today my company gave me an XBOX as an award!
Mary: Wow! Why? Did you do something?
Jim: I always do things. What do you think I do all day?
Mary: I thought you just filled out forms and drank free sodas all day at work.
Jim. Ha Ha. I only do that for the first 6 hours each day. The last 2 hours I really work hard.
Mary: So that's why they gave you an XBOX?
Jim. No. I think because they had no bonus money to give out so they came up with this instead.
Mary: Well, games are fun. What games did you get?
Jim: It doesn't seem like it came with any. It's just a high-priced DVD player so far. We have to spend money to buy some actual games.
Mary: Is it the latest XBOX?
Jim: Yeah. It's an XBOX360. It just came out.
Mary: Cool. So the brand new latest XBOX with no games.
Jim: Yeah.
Mary: Nice award. Kinda like a car with no wheels.
Jim: I might sell it on eBay.
Mary: Good idea.

私は人の名前を覚えるのは結構苦手なんですが、皆さんはどうですか？
今回は練習しやすいように音声ファイルを会話全体とパートごとのものとに分けてみました。

（例文）Hi, um... What was your name again? I can't keep all my new co-workers' names straight. It's my second day working here.


（訳）こんにちは、、、えっと、お名前はなんでしたっけ？皆さんの名前がごっちゃになっちゃって。今日で二日目なもので。
（解説）一度名前を聞いた人に、後日忘れてしまってもう一度聞きたいときはWhat was your name again?です。straightは「真っ直ぐ」や「きちんとした状態」という意味なので、can't keep 〜 straightで「〜がごっちゃになってしまう」という感じ。頭の中で同僚の顔と名前が整理されていないという状態ですね。【続きを読む】

うちの夫がこの週末出社だったのですが、彼の受け取った週末出勤を促す上層部からのメールで面白いのがあったので編集してここで紹介します。
上司の上司のまた上司、というような結構な上の方が部内全員に送ってきた、とても回りくどい、英語にしては行間を読まなくてはならないという内容のメールです。
この方はとても頭が良く、ここシリコンバレーの某超大手ハイテク企業で出世街道まっしぐらの方です。旬のフレーズも満載です。

I want to let everyone know how much I appreciate the extra effort you've been putting in lately.

最近の皆さんのより一層の努力に、私がどれだけ感謝しているか伝えたいと思います。

（解説）
まずポジティブなことから始めてますね。悪いことを伝える時は、ポジティブ、ネガティブ、ポジティブのサンドイッチが基本です（笑）。
でもこの始まりって、りぃも昔の上司によくもらいましたが、見た瞬間いつも「あ〜あ、何か悪いことがこの後来るぞ〜」と溜息が出るんですよね。

りぃの上司はよくI wanted to take a moment to thank everybody for 〜（この場で〜に対して皆にありがとうを言いたい・・・）と始めていました。
